I’m delighted to feature Kate Cherichello Tente from Healthy In The Garden State—the latest in our Boss in the ’Burbs series.
Healthy in the Garden State spotlights the people, places, and programs across the Garden State that support healthier living. By highlighting local resources and real stories, from the shore to the cities and the green spaces in between, Healthy In The Garden State makes wellness feel approachable, accessible, and grounded in community rather than perfection.
Can you share a little about your background? And what inspired you to start Healthy In The Garden State?
Having grown up in New Jersey with a passion for performing, leaving the state and finding a passion for fitness as well, then moving back to New Jersey, Healthy In The Garden State was born from bringing those parts of my life together – hosting a show about my home state and the many ways it supports healthy living.
We are surrounded by so many health-related places, organizations, restaurants, the list goes on – Yet making healthy choices can feel so overwhelming. There’s so much information and so many options that it’s easy to feel stuck or unsure where to start.
My hope is that Healthy In The Garden State helps make health feel more accessible, local, and human: showing that living a healthy, full life doesn’t require perfection, but rather small, realistic steps. If the show helps even one person feel more empowered to take care of themselves, then it’s doing what it set out to do.
What products and/or services do you offer?
I’ve been a certified fitness professional for nearly 20 years, working with people of all backgrounds and levels. I offer workshops in organizations and companies as well as individual training in-person and virtually. A performer as well, I’ve been a part of professional musicals and concerts around the country.
Healthy In The Garden State combines my backgrounds in the fitness and entertainment industries. The show is a streaming series celebrating all the ways New Jersey supports healthier living. From the shore to the cities and every green space we can get to in between, we uncover the people, places, and programs helping our communities thrive – physically, mentally, socially, and beyond.
Our mission with the show and brand overall is to share valuable resources and tools for living healthier lives, with a focus on all that New Jersey has to offer. We highlight people, places, businesses, and research helping us to make healthier choices each day.
What is the most valuable piece of advice you have received as an aspiring entrepreneur?
Taking the time to connect with people in the community is one of many that come to mind. This is something I love to do, but at the same time can be challenging when often working remotely in the prep work for the show. Going to events in person, taking the opportunity to speak to others when out and about, even connecting via social media have all been ways that have not only helped the business but also helped me– We need that human connection, and there are so many people on a mission to help people live better lives in big and ‘everyday’ ways. It’s been wonderful to see that goodness, especially now.
What have been some of the reactions from Healthy In The Garden State you’ve been hearing?
There has been a lot of “I had no idea that existed here!” and “Saving this idea!”, which is exactly what we want to happen. The more we can introduce residents to healthy ideas, tips, and locations, the better for everyone.
It has also been really fun to see responses like, “We went there when we were kids– I haven’t seen that place in years!” People who grew up in one area of NJ but moved away are being reminded of what all is here– and seeing how things have or haven’t changed.
