Guest post written by Elizabeth, my Madison town specialist and fellow local mom. She’s always on the hunt for hidden gems and fun family spots—and this one might just be your new summer favorite. If you’re looking for a quick, kid-friendly escape close to home, Elizabeth has you covered.
I’m (selfishly) hesitant to write about this location for my next Friday Funday because it’s one of my favorite go-to summer spots—and few people know about it, especially the programming that takes place on Monday mornings. Hidden within Lewis Morris Park in Mendham lies Sunrise Lake Beach Club, a summer oasis for children of all ages.
I originally discovered this fun, man-made beach during a walk in the summer of 2020, when everything was shut down due to COVID. I had never seen anything like it before and assumed it was some sort of members-only or private club. I was so excited to learn that it’s actually a public amenity anyone can pay to enjoy!
Sunrise Lake Beach Club is open Wednesday through Sunday and offers a variety of entertainment for all ages. While my children are too small to have tried it out themselves, the lake includes what looks like a fun inflatable obstacle course for those old enough to swim out and enjoy. You can also rent paddle boats or reserve a beach tent for large groups or birthday parties.
From personal experience, my family has really enjoyed attending their Munchkin Monday programming, which takes place every Monday (starting June 23rd) from 9:00 AM–11:30 AM. This program is intended for children 4 and under to enjoy the lake in a calmer environment with other little ones. Children 4 and under are free; adults and older children are $10 each. It’s been a wonderful way to kick off each week of summer. My kids love making sandcastles, going down the small water slides with other toddlers, and splashing in the lake. They especially get a kick out of all the little fish swimming around their feet. There’s also a lifeguard on duty during the session.
I personally love it because, at this stage in life with two small kids, day trips to the shore don’t always make the most sense—with all the packing, traffic, and naps to consider. This is the perfect way for my kids to get a beach experience and still be home within 30 minutes.
Typically, there’s ample parking and shade in the morning, and the lake also includes picnic tables and Adirondack chairs for families to enjoy. Snacks are available for purchase, but you’re also welcome to bring your own. There are changing rooms on-site with restrooms and showers, plus outdoor showers for a quick rinse before heading home. I usually bring my stroller, but fair warning—with a lake comes geese poop! I try to limit our gear to one bag to avoid having to clean the stroller wheels afterward.
