If you are looking for something to do outdoors in the suburbs with your family, you don’t want to miss taking in the splendor of the fall foliage at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Chatham, NJ. This is the perfect way for your family to connect with nature and spend time together unplugged.
Visitors are encouraged to observe, study, photograph and walk with nature. The best times for observing wildlife are early in the morning and late afternoon. The Refuge is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week.
The Refuge is a 12-square-mile natural oasis where migrating waterfowl stop, rest and feed on their migration. Points of interest include the Helen Fenske Visitor Center Wildlife Observation Center, Overlook Parking Area, and over eight miles of trails in the Wilderness area.
What’s really nice is that the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is so easily accessible right from Chatham. You have a suburban town with a sprawling wildlife refuge within a few miles of one another! You can take a great day trip, without taking a long drive.
Once you arrive, make sure to stop in at the Visitor Center, which boasts state-of-the-art exhibits showcasing refuge wildlife, habitats, history, and recreational opportunities. Then check out the Nature Detective Trail, which is a short self-guided woodland trail that challenges children to use their senses and explore nature up close.
Many events are hosted at the Refuge. Check out the events calendar for dates and times.
